Mapping Hell should stay Mapping Hell, not Crafting Hell.
That, my friend, is brilliant. Congratulations.

I've registered craftinghell.net (and .com) :D

You need to export texcoords, and be sure they're UV mapped, so they're not all at 0.0,0.0.

Chances are that if someone is a nice player in mc, he/she will be a nice player in cube2 as well, without griefing, having patience to learn the way it works and so on.

See, it's not about bringing players to the cube2 community, it's about gathering friends to play with, irrespective of the game in question. It's about building a positive, fun creative community. Minecraft has more players and I figured the more people the merrier. It's a lot easier to get around when the community is bigger, since you have more people to answer your questions, and to give feedback to your builds.

We'll have contests, make clan videos, build clan bases, we'll make a hub for the clan server, one for the public server, villages and so on.

I actually haven't heard of any players which moved from Minecraft to any game on Cube Engine 2; probably as it's a way different genre which only seems to share the similarity as being cubistic (woohoo, correct me if I'm wrong).
However, I do have heard of players which moved from any game on Cube Engine 2 to Minecraft...

Well, the way I see it, it's all good. They're all good fun games. There might be someone who has been building with minecraft for a while, and wants something with a bit more realism, and might transition to sauer or tesseract once they see a few screenshots and edit with it for a bit.

Quake Live, Open Arena, Xonotic all have editor programs and mappers, and we already have a xonotic section, even if nobody is mapping for it. They're also good and fun games.

And similarities, well, they're games, they're 3D, and you can cooperatively build. That way you get to meet people and see their skill. I think it's lots of fun. Cube engine 2 games are a bit more hardcore since you have more freedom and there is no crafting.

Personally, I'm all for it, bringing more people into the clan, building houses and whatnot in minecraft, then in tesseract, maybe even importing maps from mc to tess. The downside of tesseract is that you have to build everything by hand, and even after you build it, there is no AI to populate your world. I think a better competitor to minecraft would be a cube2/tesseract based RPG with spawning NPC's and whatnot.

I am aware that some people don't like minecraft because it's full of dumb kiddies who think they're funny and post youtube videos and whatnot, but there are interesting people as well, and that's what the purpose of the clan recruitment system is - to pick those interesting people and build with them in a more relaxed fashion, since nobody's going to grief or act immaturely. We're going to have two mc servers - a public and a private one, the private one will be for clan members only, and the public one will be my project for monetization from donations, and a way to meet people. Lots of us will have admin access, and maybe a share of the earnings. There will be a lot of players connecting, hopefully we can bring it to hundreds with proper promotion. I'm still trying to learn how to make it interesting for players, and how to administer the server hardware as well. That's why I upgrade the server recently.

Alright you guys, votes seem to be going to YES, and I don't think there's need to wait any longer. Now let's figure out what the section will contain. There will be at least two sub-sections, one for the public server, and one for the private server, which will be visible to clan members only (just like the clan-only section).

There should be a suggestions thread or sub-board, and maybe a development section and a screenshot section.

Please come up with ideas on how and what to add to this. Don't just say "yeah that sounds fine". Use your brain dude.

The Mega Archive / POLL: Adding a minecraft section
July 22, 2013, 10:56:26 AM
What do you guys think? It would be related to the server I'm going to run (not the friends server which we'll keep hush hush). I think it would bring more people on, and when they see we're also a cube2 clan, they might take an interest in the game and start mapping for that as well.

Personally I'm all for forum activity.

We can even have a login rule that requires a forum account, and the two can be linked somehow. I'm sure it's technically possible.

I've decided on a case in the meanwhile, Fractal Design Core 3000.

It's only $100. It's not the cheapest but it seems to have all I need. I can even remove the white hdd bracket things and use elastics to mount the HDDs for max silence.

The Mega Archive / Re: Query about server upgrade
July 16, 2013, 12:48:53 PM
Yo guys. Server upgrade almost finished. I'll have to move some stuff around when I get a new case, but here's the new hardware:

CPU: AMD FX 6300 - http://www.cpu-world.com/CPUs/Bulldozer/AMD-FX-Series%20FX-6300.html
MoBo: MSI - http://www.msi.com/product/mb/760GA-P43--FX-.html

Since the new MoBo has a bigger form factor, I had to use my desktop's case to fit it, so now I need a new case for my desktop. Currently I'm broke so this will have to wait.

This upgrade is in regards to hosting a minecraft server. We currently run a craftbukkit server with max 20 players. After doing some math, I've planned a RAM upgrade in the future. The MoBo supports 32GB max, and it has 2x2GB now, so I think I'll get 2x8GB at some point increasing to a total of 20GB. If I allocate 200MB per player, that adds up to 100 players. It's a fairly decent server. At least to get started. I plan on upgrading as soon as donations start rolling in. There are several ways to process and reward donations on a minecraft server and apparently you can make lots of money this way.

Minecraft is fun and addictive. Compared to it, sauer is pretty boring. I've heard someone say that creative mode (in MC) is also boring compared to survival mode. MC allows you to be playful, and has a large userbase. We'll see what tesseract has to offer when it's released, but in the meantime, I'm enjoying MC and right now I'm trying to figure out how to mod the server to make it interesting, attractive and worthwile for visiting players. As you know, I already have experience modding game servers.

I'll be running two instances of CraftBukkit, one will be the main, public server, with, say, max 80-100 players, and there will be the less noisy, more private friends server, which is running already, with max 20 players. I'll increase these as the need arises.

The Mega Archive / Query about server upgrade
July 11, 2013, 10:22:15 AM
Hi guys. Since we're running a Minecraft server, it seems the server needs more resources. I've decided to start by upgrading the CPU. I've been doing some research and it seems AMD FX 6300 is the best bang for the buck. Currently we have a 2-core intel celeron at 2GHz, and the FX runs 6 cores at

What do you guys think about the CPU choice?

The RAM is currently 4(2x2)GB DDR3 1333MHz, which is fine for now.

I'll have to change the mobo as well, but I'll just get the cheapest that supports the CPU and RAM speed as well. Gigabyte or Asus. TBH, the current Gigabyte mobo has a failed on-board NIC, so I'm using a PCI one to replace that.

Also, does anyone know if the minecraft server (or craftbukkit in our case) can make use of multiple cores?

I've taken a look at your other maps as well, and if they're mostly made by you, then you have some very interesting ideas, though you could use more discipline. If they're not your maps, please tell us which are done mostly by you and which are done mostly by others.

I've taken a look at some of the maps:

Midnight - I actually think the upscaled textures are interesting, they make you feel smaller. Besides that, the map has some interesting shapes, though it doesn't look very playable.
10G - Again, interesting shapes, not sure about the playability. It's marked as made by HorseHead - is this your alias or are you trying to show us a map that isn't yours? I really appreciate honesty, so please give it to us straight.
818 - Signed by Teriyaki[yo], it looks like an interesting 1on1 map, I actually enjoy the atmosphere it makes, except the doors that kill you. What did you contribute on this map?
48075 - It looks interesting enough, though it seems to garner to a different purpose than looking good. Textures are scaled up again, which makes you feel small, but doesn't really make obvious sense. Its name suggests it's made for bots, so that was probably the purpose.
application - an interesting little house, looking quaint enough. Has a nice glass effect on the door. The doors are twice as big as they should be in proportion to the player, and there are unfinished areas - I'd give you a positive vote just on the architecture.
Battle_Blocks - this one is quite interesting, it has bold texture work, and really unique geometry. What can I say, this map has balls. Looks pretty playable as well. Should give it a try.
beed - There are texture errors, maybe you forgot to upload the cfg, and although it's visually and geometrically interesting, it feels a bit simple and the flow is quite iffy.

I'm going to stop here, because there are too many maps. My vote is yes, provided you cater to the other members' requirements. Especially the part about posting only less maps. Just pick your three favorite maps and use the forum attachment system to upload them here. Include cfg's if needed. Also include a couple of screenshots from each map. It makes it easier for everyone and faster for you to get a final answer.

sending ANYTHING is entirely too possible and even easy. Just use the same code that sends the ogz file to send other files. it doesn't matter whether it's easy or hard at this point.

anyway, I've come to a conclusion regarding sauebraten - being a free game, you can't expect anything at all from it. The editor is there just as a proof of concept, a really well-featured and well-maintained editor is miles away from what the coopedit part of sauer currently is. That being said, we can ask ourselves, how could the editor become better? How could we add these features and many more? Well, someone needs to develop it. Someone needs to spend time on it and make it into a proper editor, with lots and lots of features and usability enhancements.

But who, and why would they? Answer me this.

just pick one map and post it, with a couple of screenshots. be sure to calclight. use the forum attachment feature to upload the ogz, cfg and screenshots. maybe you can finish off the 'application' map.

are you really 21? I'm 28 btw, but most people are below 20 afaik

Resources / loopix texture set
June 07, 2013, 10:36:03 PM
Hi guys. There's a texture in Sauerbraten that I like, except I really didn't like the bumpmap on it. So I found the texture, in a folder called loopix. It seems to come from http://www.loopix-project.com/, where there's a free texture pack (go to Textures-> Freebies on the top right). I downloaded this pack and it seems to have several textures, not just the one in sauer. So I started fiddling around with CrazyBump, which generates really nice bump maps, displacement maps and specular maps, and got a WAY better result. It still needs tweaking, and should be done for each texture in the set. In fact, it can be done for many other sauer textures which don't have a bump map. It seems to have sophisticated algorithms that allow you to generate a proper bump map, displacement map and so on.

Anyway, I'll try to make this pack usable when I get some free time, in the meanwhile you're free to play with it yourself. Just pick a texture, slap it in CrazyBump and generate its bump map and so on and post it here. Later on we can do this with older sauer textures, like the default first 6 textures for example  :robotnik:
