it looks really good, I dig the colors. Don't be afraid to add more blue, to contrast with the orange.

with all the bright orange sand I wouldn't be worried about the dark textures.

there's a certain naive color palette to it, maybe try sprinkling some colder colors, green, blue, purples here and there. subtle touches that add more dynamic range. just as an experiment.

I think you answered your own question, there.

Sunlit maps like the ones you showed are very simple, since there is just one light source. However, if you want to make it look good, a few 'atmosphere' maps are needed. Something with volumetric lighting, moody settings and so on. Volumetric sunlight is not implemented yet afaik, but it might be in the future.

Other aspects are: no physics engine, no buttons/script triggering, no moving geometry (elevators, doors). Compare to some of the top engines with good visuals such as unreal.

It's a good question, it's good to become aware of where tess stands as of now. It's a hobby effort that started with a quirky idea (mapping with cubes) and got taken further, but it's not comparable with engines developed by proper teams. No large asset library, a very simple editing environment. That being said, I'm sure great looking maps can be made for it, since the mappers always find a way to make it look good.

So, in the end, I think the question is, how can I get the best results with tess.

Well, I've tried a few of them and I'm not THAT impressed. It's just an evolutionary step forward, but it's obviously still based on the familiar techniques, just with a few new techniques and lots of effects. Also, I got low FPS because I'm not using Jake's GTX 560 anymore (replaced it with my cheaper card because it was noisy).

Well it looks like it requires glibc 2.14 and I have 2.13 on debian stable, and I can't find any windows demos so... :/

Hello Friedslick6, welcome to the forum. As you can see, we are a cube/cube2 engine based community. I haven't played cube so much, I was into Sauerbraten a lot, and now into Tesseract. Hope we can coopedit soon, I edit sometimes in the evening in tesseract, on the Jolly Roger server.

just a simple layout I started, with some help from wizard and brauk, on Jolly Roger.

It needs a new name, this name was just on the server.

I believe that's just your shell associations. Try copying the ogz to your sauer folder and loading it up in sauer, it will probably work.

VGM files [ see here ] are basically logs of commands sent to sound chips. I suppose if you want to hear the music as close to the real thing as possible you have two options: 1. The real thing 2. Audio recordings of the real thing's sound output. However, the VGM files are data for sound chip emulators (not console emulator, just the sound chip part). IE the data sent by the CPU to the sound chip. I guess the real hardware might have some extra filtering on the raw sound chip output. AFAIK, it depends on the emulator as well. Kega Fusion is rumored to have the best sound emulation. To my knowledge, perfect emulation is possible, because all of the hardware can be emulated, not just the sound chip.
