Title: [Rejected] Parkour's Application
Post by: Parkour on January 15, 2012, 04:39:57 AM
Name: Josh
Alias: Parkour
Age: 16
Country: USA

How did you discover the game:  I found Sauerbraten because I was looking for a shooter game that was freeware because I use a mac and there are practically none.
What are your favorite game modes (except coopedit)? Why?:  My favorite is Instagib team, because I think it takes alot of practice to get good at it and its really rewarding when you do get good.
Why Mapping Hell?  I need a clan that I know won't A. Collapse soon after I join and B. not be hated by top notch clans.
What will you bring to the team ?  I am a pretty cool headed person I think, and I do well making atmospheric maps.

What do you prefer to do in coopedit? Why?  I like to do lighting and texturing, because I think these things are what really make a map what it is.
How many mapping projects did you start?  I have started alot of mapping projects, I don't know the exact number but my guess is around 35 actual things I put work into.
What is your favourite kind of map ?  My favorite maps are ones that keep a very constant theme, that make you feel as if you are actually inside the map physically.

Do you want to add something else ?  I'm not a very geometric mapper, I can do some intermediate shapes but I would do best taking the finished geometry and adding lighting, particles, or just spiffing it all up.

I have 3 maps I want to show.  The first is my favorite map I've done personally, because I look at it and think, "Damn, I want to live here."  It's called imperial.  I also am attaching a little revamp i did of it lit up in the night.

The second is based off a legend of zelda course, its called templeoftime.  Its a small project I did, with only two rooms, but in my opinion It shows what I do best.

The third is a map in a desolate place in the artic.  Its an abandoned base, not very detailed building wise but i spent a while trying to get the atmosphere and feel of it right.

i liked the imperial night map the most, so I'm going to base my vote off of that one,

First off i liked the idea of the map allot even the lighting but did notice some problems like:

- some ports of the map still had the default texture, you could notice it with out cheating
- some of the geometric was messed up, I'm guessing you copied it with smaller cubes
- ports of the map are dark,
- the balls on the realign are both pointing the same way so it makes it look a little off,
- there's a gap between the path and the bridges
- light was coming from nowhere, if thats just your style then thats fine but i would add some type of floor lights or lamp posts

all of those things are easy to fix, i think this map would be fun to fight on so just fix those things and my vote will be a "Yes"

Loved both imperial maps :D its a good concept :)

Mr fixxit has mentioned most issues, but my points of criticism are mainly the inward curves. I dunno about everyone else but i find them a bit irritating. I came up with two solutions, ones ugly, ones not so bad, but you may want to consider them and touch them up. Or you could build something decorative on top of the gaps, up to you.
Touch up these hiccups and you have my 'Yes' vote :)

The third attachment is an example of what Fixxit said about default texture.

Waste was a bit bland, i suggest you look at map 'Frozen' for some ideas and inspiration :]

So I first looked at waste. I thought it was okay, but I didn't think it was impressive. I then looked at Imperial. I was impressed, but still not impressed enough. Finally I looked at Temple of Time, and I died of awesome. I think everything in that map is put there perfectly. It shows what you can do best, like you said. I vote yes.

First of all, thank you for the feedback!  Secondly I attempted to fix what mr fixxit and yoddle were getting at.

Yoddle:  I added a small marble caps on top of the holes, which look slightly decorative and are much less noticeable.

Mr. Fixxit:  I fixed the sphere alignment problem by widening the rails so they are even now, I recolored the accidental default textures.  I left the lights without a source, because its supposed to be like a supernatural place, the lights arent supposed to have a source.  I kept some parts of the map darker to add emphasis on the lighted buildings, but fixed the problem in others I saw fit.

Here is the map with the fixed hiccups.  If you see anything else that irritates/jumps out at you in a bad way let me know and ill fix it.

Glad to see the changes  :D Much much better now :)

Good to see the gaps covered as well. Still a tad irritating, but its adequate :)

cool beans, my vote is a 'YES'

yeah i totally understand not having a light source, but with the dark ports i would add a dark lights over the pillars like this:

Before:

After: Note that i only add one light but if you add more you wouldn't get those shadows on the bottom left

Time to reply to the application.

I'm just gonna give suggestions

Imperial Night:

-Rather than cover up the quirky cube holes, fix them.

-I hate that trak5/glass.jpg texture for the stairs, with alpha. It makes me angry.

-Your circles are pointy on the ends, which may or may not be intentional, but it looks odd.

- The arches are kinda glitchy.

Despite that, I really like this map, it reminds me of Yop.

Temple Of Time

- Light makes me happy

- Arches make me happy

- Circles don't

Waste

- Not really a playable layout, at all.

- I like the textures you used.

- Your environment is nice, with the snow and shit. The terrain could be changed though.

None of these things really make your application smell bad, so I guess my vote is yes.

Parkour a little advice/opinion

Make the blue lights on "waste", a little less intense, provide some abience, and maybe even make some more in the center of the map, rather than just the snowdrifts. But of course this IS only personal opinion

Below are the blue lights I'm talking about
