News & Discussions / mappinghell now hosting vgmrips
March 28, 2014, 12:17:56 PM
Hello friends!

Just wanted to announce that I am now hosting http://vgm.mdscene.net

It is a forum dedicated to music rips from retro game consoles and arcade machines. VGM stands for Video Game Music, and is a binary file format for storing ripped music, but also a larger community related to that retro sound.

The story is that I was (and still am) working on a project related to video game music, and I needed some help with converting to the VGM format, so I met ValleyBell, who is maintaining and developing the VGM format and player and winamp plugin, and many other things, then I joined their IRC and their forum, and when it was announced that the person hosting the forum will no longer host it, I offered to host it myself.

After I started to host it, I already added a chatbox similar to the one on MH, and I'm also working on a database to store the VGM meta-data and display it in a more elaborate fashion than just plain forum posts.

Anyway, if you're into retro game music or just good music (some of the games have sweeeeeeeeet musics), visit the vgmrips forum and enjoy!

The Mega Archive / Re: Ukraine Discussion Thread
March 28, 2014, 08:19:05 AM
I'm not really up to date with the situation, all I know is Russia is performing some sort of aggression on Ukraine. Some people in my class started making a few paintings relating to the riots and violence, for an upcoming exhibition about the conflict in Ukraine, but I'm really not into that sort of thing. People on the street, violence, politics, it's not that I don't feel for them, but I'd rather not get into an aggravating mindset. I'm not part of the conflict, so I don't live the pain deeply, therefore my message would only be shallow, so I just stay away from that stuff.

I like positive and fun things, so I'm focusing on getting laid tbh.

I wish everybody a good result and a happy life.

It's strange that you associate it with masturbation, the first thing that comes to my mind is amazement, awe, fear, freezing up, like a big event happened in front of you, you're looking at something huge or powerful that's taking place.

Cooler: Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro rev. 2

RAM: 2 x 2GB Kingston 1333MHz

Storage: 4x1TB Software RAID5 (total space 2.7TB). The disks are suspended with elastics, to reduce noise. There is a fan across three of them. I plan on using some 120mm or 140mm fans to cool all of the disks.

Power Supply: Seasonic S12II-520 Bronze, 520W

It generally runs headless, since it's much easier to SSH to it.

Running up-to-date Debian 7.4 "wheezy".

Internet connection is just a regular home connection, I was lucky enough to have a static IP. Upload speed is capped at 10Mbps. There are downtimes now and then.

Location: Bucharest, Romania.

Hosts mappinghell.net.

Runs the Jim Dandy Sauerbraten server.

The Mega Archive / What's up

Hey man, I've been busy with a lot of stuff, I'm just going to post stuff off the top of my head here.

I am collecting old sound cards, ISA or PCI, that have FM synthesis chips on them, such as the YMF262 (OPL3) or YMF278 (OPL4) or Yamaha XG cards. I got this today:

On this card, the LS-212 and LS-216 are YMF262 and YAC512 clones, respectively. The YMF262 generates the digital signal, and YAC converts it to audio.

With them, and some old MoBos I have laying around, I'd like to make a MIDI synth, that I can just plug my MIDI keyboard into and jam.

I have an old 486 board, and I think I'll use that because it doesn't require a CPU fan, so that means less noise, which is good. Hopefully I can box it neatly and have a device as small as possible.

What you guys been up to?

Happy Valentines!

I'm not complaining about being single. I'm knee deep in attraction and dating books and programs, and I've had quite the revelation recently, about broken hearts and vulnerability. All you really have to do is get out there and talk to people.

Let me recommend a book I'm reading now: Mark Manson - Models. Search for it on bookza.org. Also search for The Blueprint Decoded DVD set from RSD. Great stuff!

This dating material helps in other areas too, btw.

Them trees would make a lot of paper!

You know what you can do, make a black charred texture, remove the leaves and add a flame particle to make some burning tree area.

I wonder what is actually left of that quite big list of names?

I have some trouble with certain accounts actually.
An administrator shouldn't be unactive, else he (or she) isn't fullfilling his (or her) tasks right (they should be degraded to regular member again).
Members which left the clan shouldn't still be ranked as admin neither moderator or even member (Sweet is a great example for that)..
People which are unactive aren't counting to me as real members. They are rather "wanna be member but don't expect any effort from me". Same for extending their inactivity by posting useless comments (while not doing anything the rest of the time to keep the clan grow and flow). Those guys don't deserve to wear an MH tag. Be proud, or be dead.

So, who is still a hardcore member of this clan?

P.S.
I wouldn't mind cleaning up the memberlist, but I'm still a regular member. I thought someone stated that I'm clanleader of the Sauerbraten part?

P.P.S.
I'm actually posting this so the clan has a fresh start once more. Members which are nonexistant aren't helping with that.

I see your point, Sui, but let's discuss this in the Clan Only section before making any changes.

Goodbye MH,

Well, I don't know how to say this but I think its time for me to leave too. This clan has gotten really inactive since I joined and It's just no fun online anymore since we're not all together. Seriously when was the last time we ever saw half the clan list online.... let alone a quarter? I've thrown a lot of ideas out there and no one is taking the initiative. We don't even have a clan/stuffs map where we can show off our shit to other people; show em how great we really are. Wheres the leadership? Who exactly is running the clan? Without that motivation or figurehead people are going to start losing interest; I know what its like because I've been there before, and believe me, its not easy. Now dont get me wrong, this is a great clan with a good group of skilled people, but now I honestly feel as if this just isn't worth staying apart of anymore.

Not only that but the lack of respect between members isn't helping it either

Before any of you start raising questions I can tell you right now that this has nothing to do with Ardelico. The thought about leaving has been on my mind for some time now. I was never apart of that mess and I dont plan on getting involved. I am leaving simply because I want to focus on starting up my old clan again. From 2008-11 Tech Republic was one of the biggest and greatest clans that the sauer community has ever seen, and I want to relive those memories again. I miss the goofing off in meetings, the endless hide and seek matches on the clan base, and just having fun editing and hanging out with friends. I know what it takes to run a clan, what it means to be a leader and I'm just not seeing that here anymore. Unless someone steps up to the plate to get things going again, this clan is going nowhere... You can count on that.

Anyways, It was fun while it lasted, but now I feel that it's time to move on. I thought about the matter one last time overnight and have made my decision. I am now formally resigning from Mapping Hell. Best of luck to keeping this clan afloat, there's something different here that other clans just dont have...

- Kind Regards, MasterTechCC :kirby:

Wow, dude, that's hard, right there.

You're right, if anything is going to get a community out of a rut, it's leadership, and lively leadership. Before, I used to map a lot more often, and I'd map with good players and invite into the clan, and I guess at that point I was the unofficial leader. Later on, Windecker was leading along, and I guess there might be more people who could be regarded as in the leadership position, but in this sort of context, a leader is simply someone who enjoys playing the game and being online enough for coopedit matches to start. And I think that's the only thing really necessary.

Sorry to see you go. I'm not going to ask you to stay, because you're right about the inactivity, and I respect your decision. However, you're welcome back if you decide to come back, when the clan has become active again.

I'm figuring out right now what I can do to help the activity back up.

Good luck with your clan! Note that it will remain marked as a friend clan.

I've been trying to fix an old B/W 12" monitor, so I can use it to test a signal generator I  want to make. I eventually want to make a sprite-based video generator, controlled by a CPU, similar to game consoles.

Hey Ard, good luck with your application!

Sorry to see you go, I guess you need to be in a clan that's already active, instead of one that needs your help to become active.

Happy mapping and happy new year!
