Green - Average idiot who dumps lava everywhere and calls it a work of art

Purple - Any respectable mapper

Orange - The gifted mappers who have a finished work of art the second they sit down.

The graph shows the maximum percentage of completion achievable on any given map given the number of editors. Imagine the time span as 21 days.

News & Discussions / Walking into Mordor
March 10, 2012, 04:53:11 AM
I feel this is important news.

Was curious on how to get to Mordor, so like any other self respecting human being I Googleplexed it.

I did a search on Google Maps, set to 'Walking Paths'

Google tells me that I cannot simply walk into Mordor.

The Mega Archive / Dear Cooper.

Cooper. I know you will read this.   :)

Grow up.

Now, I'm sure you will understand that maps will be removed if they are not of adequate quality to be displayed on the website. We used to have a very nice system on Quad where maps would be flagged for various issues. We could flag for Screenshot problems, General Quality, Incorrect packaging, Lighting issues, and some other things that I cannot bring myself to recall. These flags were removed because people like you cannot refrain from bitching about them.

I should note that the standard for 'Adequate quality' is not very high at all, and is in fact no more than the discretion of the Moderators who view the node. It was only a matter of time before somebody took it down, if not Calinou himself.
A map of such quality does no more but spark argument and waste server space and bandwidth. Would you really play it?
I never got a response from YOU on what YOU thought about the map, and you've neglected from saying anything of the like in your forum post.

Regardless, it seems to me that you view everything as a personal attack. Go right ahead and look at things as you please, it does not concern me. The removal of the node was not intended as any personal attack or attack on your beloved CM clan, it was just me doing my job as a moderator. The fact that I am part of MH has no part in this, and I truly couldn't care less about who made the map. If it is good, then it's good. If it isn't, then it isn't; it is that simple. Take your CM Valley map; do I dislike it based on who made it? No. It is an excellent map. The fact that you choose to associate the MH tag with the deletion of the node is no more than you trying to justify something that plays no part.

The only reason I can picture keeping it is for a laugh or two from the comments.

Feel free to quote this directly on your forum and try to twist my words into something to make you feel better.

I hope this clears things up.

Sincerely, Jake.

Some of ( most of ) the best maps I have ever seen, Calinou has rated with one star, and insulted the authors through his comments...
but now HE posts THIS?

http://www.quadropolis.us/node/3294

I knew full well already that he wasn't capable of anything, but most people will stay behind the curtain and give the illusion that they have some talent... This is just a kick in the face to anybody he has ever criticized.

It's like telling somebody that their four billion dollar rocket is childish, and then trying to launch a bottle rocket with a paper cone taped on the front and expect gratification.

The Mega Archive / So..
January 18, 2012, 04:57:45 PM
It's -48 today, apparently. It's actually something like -30 with a bit of wind, but that's what the weather site and my fingers tell me. Truck wouldn't start because something killed the battery.

So... in the bitter cold, fumbling with a ratchet and sockets, I changed the battery in the blowing wind and finally got it started.

I am now waiting for the truck to warm up. I will give pictures of my mitten warmer, as my mitten warmer is the only thing keeping me sane. :

The Mega Archive / What I would do if...
January 10, 2012, 03:59:21 AM
I'm very bored, and don't feel like doing anything else... so this is what I thought of:

So... If I ever make billions of dollars ( unlikely ) I have a plan to blow half of my money.
I would like to make about 100 unique, yet similar large statues... out of stone.
They could be machined or carved by hand; whatever enough money would get me. ;)

The idea would to make each statue similar to the other, and about 10 to 12 feet tall. They could be large faces or something of the like.
Once completed, they would all be buried. They would be buried in line with each other however with an EXACT spacing of 100 miles from one to the next along a pre-calculated path.

The first statue would be located in the north western corner of the Yukon. Kind of hard to find...
100 statues at that spacing, following the course I've already plotted, would make a gently curved line all the way to Rio Gallegos in the southern tip of Argentina.

Each statue would be marked with it's precise latitude and longitude, it's number in the sequence, and a long but partial message. There would be an equation for finding the next stone in the sequence. ( Numbers are far easier to decode depending on how the system is created. ) All of these things would be encoded in some way or another.
The first and last statues in this long line would hold a large key to decoding the messages, but the keys would be incomplete. Roughly a third of the key would be on each end piece; the remainder of the key would be segmented and carved into every third statue in the chain. The encoded messages would decode into Latin. I would probably write some great prophecy over the 100 statues... :)

Of course it is possible that somebody resourceful could decode the messages without the majority of the pieces, but otherwise, most would be required. The message is incomplete without all of them anyways.

The message would be displayed in such a fashion that you would read from left to right across all the statues, covering at least five lines.
This would ensure that *nearly* all must be found.

You may wonder what my intent would be to do such a thing, and it's really quite simple.. albeit expensive.
Confuse the fuck out of future generations... and perhaps spread fear of the apocalypse. It's how I roll.

If you had the money and wanted to mess with future generations, what would you do?

The Mega Archive / A short story.
January 01, 2012, 05:08:16 PM
So... I bought me a new computer case, though prior to this event I made a futile attempt at relocating the stuff in my room.
After moving desks and heaps of junk around I realized it all to be pointless and put everything back.

I made one change however, which was sliding both of my desks 8 inches towards the door. Sure, the door doesn't open all the way now, but it gave me space to slide my computer back partially between the desk and the wall.
( which is where it is in those pictures. )

Little did I realize, I covered the vent that supplies this room with heated air. With this room being very inefficient, thermally speaking, that was what some may refer to as a, "Dick move."  You see, the ambient room temperature drops like a stone thanks to a fifty year old shitty window, and one uninsulated internal wall with a small hole in it.

I woke up this morning to a room at 7 degrees Centigrade and a computer idling very happily at the same temperature.

Moral of the story: I type very slow when my fingers are cold.

I was trying to think of possible engines that we could expand to.
Places where there isn't tooo big of a learning curve, or a huge jump in system requirements.

Personally, I think it would be bloody awesome if we, as a group, made something utilizing UDK... but ... here we get into issues where there is a large learning curve, and quite massive system requirements to smoothly use the tools supplies.
Plus, we'd need to be able to make almost all of our assets.

UDK = No. :(

------

A very possible game to dabble with I think would be Xonotic; a branch of Nexuiz.

The engine is capable, with a lively bunch of developers, and the system requirements are not horribly high.
Mapping doesn't take very long to get the grasp of.

Xontic = Maybe.  :)

------

Alternatively.
We could.. wait for it.. make our own game!

Hows a 2D Sidescrolling super awesome game sound?
There are TONS of 2D game engines available for free.

LOVE engine, for example. It's free and everything is LUA.
http://love2d.org/

------

And my final idea for now is that we create our own political party, and run for president or prime-minister, or supreme emperor / evil dictator is some random country of our choosing. ( We'll make a poll to decide which country later )
We could name our party 'The Deadly Serious Party,' as that name hasn't been used since the 80s and should be free by now.

------
If yall know some awesome *Popular* games that support modding and level creation, post the names and details.
It would be fun, imo, to try something on the side. At least for some of us.

The Mega Archive / Modular maps.
November 02, 2011, 02:46:02 PM
I am going to make a set of modular map segments.
These segments will be constructed so any one segment may fit to any other segment seamlessly, in any order, so as to create a map.

These sections may consist of, but are not limited to:

-Direct Hallway
   - multiple versions with different details
-90 degree intersection. Either a hard turn or a rounded turn.
-T intersection
-4 way intersection
-A set of short halls that have specific slopes.
-Large rooms with multiple spots to attach hallways.
- Open, vertical shafts.
- Ladders shafts
- Stair wells. Either straight or with stairs that wrap around.
- Short segments to aleviate spacing issues, should any module be slightly longer than the rest.
All modules should be either 1 or 2 units in length. ( 1 unit simply being however large I decide a module should be. Preferably something on the grid. )
etc.

If anybody would like to make their own, we could make our own sets, and try making the same maps with each set :P

Other / The story of Sir Isaac James SteinMeister.
August 29, 2011, 06:51:36 AM
On this wonderous occasion of occasions; the occasion latter to that of which came before, and prior to that of which has yet to come, I bring a tale of which is to be told.

A tale of grand proportion! A tale so grand, about characters so Grande that you will stop and think, 'Oh my dear lord. Gosh diddly darn, are these characters in this story not grande?' And thou shalt anser thou self with 'Why yes my good sir, they are the grandest of characters in the grandest of story. A story so grand, presented in such a granular way.'

I give you the tale of Sir Isaac James SteinMeister.

Sir Isaac James SteinMeister was a Meister of many Steins, and well deserving of the prefix of 'Sir,' Sir. He grew up a humble boy in the small town of WinsterSinsterChesterMinsterShinsterShireEsterClireDublineSpireShire, of UgandaSclomania.

The town of WinsterSinsterChesterMinsterShinsterShireEsterClireDublineSpireShire was small, with a population of but a mere four and ninety.
That's right. Sir Isaac James SteinMeister was one of the 94 people of his small town, in which everybody knew everybody, all whom knew everybody else in which everybody took the liberty of knowing.

Isaac, or should I say James, or perhaps Isaac James.. was a hard worker, and strived day in and day out and during the long nights between days in order to please his superiors. He worked hard and then took that hard work and worked that into something useful, in which he'd later sell for monetary gain and greater status.
Over the years and hears and spelling mistakes of hard work and working hard to get the hard work done, James ( or should I say Isaac ) saved up a small fortune of nine pence and fourty seven electrum in which he used to purchase a long enough lever and a place to rest it.

Sir Isaac James SteinMeister took his long enough lever and place to rest it, along with his excess currency, and moved out of his parents house and the age of eight and two hundred twenty months. SteinMeister, or should I say, the Meister of Steins, traveled long and far, and very far over a long period of time. Finally, after decades of erossion, The Meister of IsaacSteins had arrived at his girlfriend house.

Sir Isaac Jame SteinMeister's girlfriend was truely something else. I do not mean that in a positive way by any means. She was a beast. If she were alive in modern times, she'd chase after yellow trains screaming 'TWINKY!' assuming that she were to learn what a twinky was, and assuming she could move. She weighed in at a grueling 330 mega-dodeca-hepta-terra-giga-tons, with a top speed of 18,000 miles per second, ) as she was landlocked and incapable of moving. )

It is around this point in which we learn why Isaac bought his 'large enough lever and a place to rest it'
You see, ever since Isaac was a humble boy in the town of WinsterSinsterChesterMinsterShinsterShireEsterClireDublineSpireShire with the population of ninety and four, he dreamed of science. You could say he had a bit of a science fetish. He spent many  hours of his day when he was working hard to be hard at work studing gravity and the position of the stars, and it was his dream to change his own stars and make something of his life. After spending years saving up money, he finally was able to aquire the equipment to make it happen. This consisted of a large enough lever and a place to rest it, and a few convenient plot related items.

Sir Isaac James SteinMeister had a plan, and a plan it would be, and a plan it was already and thus would not have to be due to being in the state of already being so.
Isaac set out one fateful morning, walking at a slant to keep from being dragged in by his girlfriends gravitational pull. Isaac approached an apple tree, and with his lever and place to rest it, he heaved the apple tree out of the ground. ( killing hundreds ) the apple tree tore loose and was instantly sucked into the large woman's gravitational field. ( She was not actually his girlfriend, and only stated as such in order that he may get close to her without being consumed as an after diner snack. ) The apples flew at a breakneck speed, breaking free of the flying tree which was also flying at a break neck speed in which was break-neck-ed enough to break necks at said speed. They acquired velocity at a rate of 14 feet per second squared minus the air and gravitational resistance of the planet beneath them!

Upon reaching their terminal velocity, Sir Isaac James SteinMeister drew his bow and explosive arrows, which he conveniently found for the sake of the plot. Isaac lifted an arrow into place. James grabbed the string with two fingers.  The Meister Of Steins drew the draw cord back, and finally, Sir SteinMeister 'Let er Fly.'
A crack of lightning flew across his vision, as well as the arrow that he just shot. The arrow, moving at a slightly more breakneck speed than the apples, pierced a flying apple, and then coincidentally, five more. There was a flash and a bang and a pop, and a beeping sound from a nearby microwave seven hundred years in the future. Fifteen minutes later, the sound wave caught up.

In a jaw busting flabber gusting gast glabbering bamboo splattering ice bladdering explosion, the apples explosionified. You see, Isaac knew that if he used a micro flux capacitor, consisting of a capacitor covered in flux, he could trigger a chain reaction in the apples core. A reaction in which all the apple's core's micro chains would break, and thus allow the contained appular energy to escape. Indeed he did know this. He also knew that the combined explosive power would be enough to hurdle the bitch.. err.. woman.. into space, and possibly create a dimensional fluxification warp through which to vent off the excess energy and keep from destroying the planet.

The explosion pushed the large woman free of the planet at a velocity that was obviously higher than the planets escape velocity, and in a run-on sentence she flew into space. Her fat rolls dragged all the nearest stairs close to her path, and as she hurdled through space, she left a cylindrical path of stares in her wake. That path of stars looks like a glowing white circle, which usually hides behind the moon. We call this the 'Sir Isaac James SteinMeister Custom Constellation'

On a side note, the dimensional fluxification warp vented all the excess energy into the same spot ten billion six hundred sixty two million four hundred forty four thousand four hundred forty six years into the future. By that time, the planet and the rest of that galaxy was infact far away. The celestial system in that place at that time was in fact 'Abell 1835 IR1916'

The entire galaxy was destroyed instantly.

That concludes one of the many adventures of Sir Isaac James SteinMeister and his band of... erm.. himself.

So there he was.

Standing there.

Just standing there.

---1---

He didn't know why he was standing there, but that's what he was doing. So this guy who was just standing there was thinking to himself while he stood there. "Why am I just standing here?" he thought as stood there, Hhe did not know why he was standing there, and no matter how many times he asked himself why he was just standing there whilst he stood there, the answer did not come, leaving him just standing there, with no reason in his head as to why he just stood there.

All of a sudden, while he stood there, he saw another man just standing there. While he stood there, he was all up 'n like, 'Why's he just standing there?' as he continued to stand there, but he did not know why the man standing there was just standing there.
The other man who was just standing there has a similar though whilst standing there. The specific thought he had whilst he stood there was, 'Why are both He and I standing here, and most likely wondering why the other is doing likewise?' An answer did not come to him whilst he stood there, as he asked himself the question, and while standing there an answer would not come, as he did not already know it, and thus could not answer his own question.

So the two stood there.  Locked perpetually in the state of 'just standing there' wondering why the other was just standing there. The would stand there perhaps for all eternity, or perhaps until the other decided, 'I've had enough of just standing here. I'm done standing here,' and moves on to a new place for in which to stand.

They stood there. Days past, then weeks, months, decades, millenia, galactic years and so on and so forth, all whilst they just stood there. Empires rose and fell, and fell around the areas in which they stood after rising. All while these two men stood. There.

Tune in next week, where we will be visited by a surprise guest actor!

The Mega Archive / Pointless ( or is it? ) counting.
January 14, 2011, 05:59:28 AM
I got an Ipod nano, 6th gen for christmas, and I must say, it is it the coolest little piece of technology I've ever had.

It has a pedometer built in, and for those who don't know, it measures how much of a pedophile you are. It also count's footsteps. I've found this device to be extremely acurate, + or - three to five steps per start/stop.
I the past 7 days, I've taken 37,206 steps, with my average step being about 34 inches from heal to heal at the rate I walk. According to my crude math, ((37206*34)/12)/5280 that is roughly 20 miles of walking. 19.96 to be more precise

Has anybody else done stuff like this before?
I find that I am extremely amused by seeing how far I've walked. ;)

Im going to start setting goals of increasingly large numbers. :P

He also claims to know 'Windecker' and that I am in HIS clan, and does not believe I am myself.

I've been analyzing some mental disorders recently, just for fun, and the topic eventually brought me around to my own writing.
I have a habit of writing the letters of a word in the wrong order, but spelling the word correctly.
Like this:
t esd         ( missed the U )
tuesd y     ( added the U after writing the D, missed the A )
tuesday    ( added the A after writing the Y )

When writing fast, my mind seems to skip letters, but leaves spaces where they should be and they get filled in shortly after. I am often times not even aware of this.

I was curious if there was a name for this... What ever you call it.
Perhaps I just write too bloody fast and my brain skips a letter, and realizes it afterwards.
