Hi guys. Since we're running a Minecraft server, it seems the server needs more resources. I've decided to start by upgrading the CPU. I've been doing some research and it seems AMD FX 6300 is the best bang for the buck. Currently we have a 2-core intel celeron at 2GHz, and the FX runs 6 cores at

What do you guys think about the CPU choice?

The RAM is currently 4(2x2)GB DDR3 1333MHz, which is fine for now.

I'll have to change the mobo as well, but I'll just get the cheapest that supports the CPU and RAM speed as well. Gigabyte or Asus. TBH, the current Gigabyte mobo has a failed on-board NIC, so I'm using a PCI one to replace that.

Also, does anyone know if the minecraft server (or craftbukkit in our case) can make use of multiple cores?

Sounds good to me.

Not that i have any idea about minecraft servers, this seems relevant with a possible solution:

Instead of messing around with minecraft, why don't you ask people about a specific date when they would be willing to map in sauer?

I'd do it myself, but nobody would even open the thread.

In terms of myself, i absolutely suck at planning. But whenever i'm on, it seems no-one else is on as of late. Have been on sauer/re last few days in a row, haven't seen anyone!

Yo guys. Server upgrade almost finished. I'll have to move some stuff around when I get a new case, but here's the new hardware:

CPU: AMD FX 6300 - http://www.cpu-world.com/CPUs/Bulldozer/AMD-FX-Series%20FX-6300.html
MoBo: MSI - http://www.msi.com/product/mb/760GA-P43--FX-.html

Since the new MoBo has a bigger form factor, I had to use my desktop's case to fit it, so now I need a new case for my desktop. Currently I'm broke so this will have to wait.

This upgrade is in regards to hosting a minecraft server. We currently run a craftbukkit server with max 20 players. After doing some math, I've planned a RAM upgrade in the future. The MoBo supports 32GB max, and it has 2x2GB now, so I think I'll get 2x8GB at some point increasing to a total of 20GB. If I allocate 200MB per player, that adds up to 100 players. It's a fairly decent server. At least to get started. I plan on upgrading as soon as donations start rolling in. There are several ways to process and reward donations on a minecraft server and apparently you can make lots of money this way.

Minecraft is fun and addictive. Compared to it, sauer is pretty boring. I've heard someone say that creative mode (in MC) is also boring compared to survival mode. MC allows you to be playful, and has a large userbase. We'll see what tesseract has to offer when it's released, but in the meantime, I'm enjoying MC and right now I'm trying to figure out how to mod the server to make it interesting, attractive and worthwile for visiting players. As you know, I already have experience modding game servers.

I'll be running two instances of CraftBukkit, one will be the main, public server, with, say, max 80-100 players, and there will be the less noisy, more private friends server, which is running already, with max 20 players. I'll increase these as the need arises.

I've decided on a case in the meanwhile, Fractal Design Core 3000.

It's only $100. It's not the cheapest but it seems to have all I need. I can even remove the white hdd bracket things and use elastics to mount the HDDs for max silence.
