Hey guys. It has come to my attention that some members are leaving, seemingly due to clan inactivity. Let's brainstorm some ideas for some simple projects that people can take up.

Here are my ideas:

1. given this picture [picture of medium detail building] recreate the scene in sauerbraten. Post a screenshot of your work from the same angle the picture was taken.
2. given these pictures of a house, try to recreate it as true to nature as possible
3. given these pictures of a building, try to make a playable layout based on its layout, then add details keeping true to the original building in style

Of course, how would other clan members pitch in?

1. and 2. members judge how close the recreated scene is to the original picture, and suggest improvements (or edit themselves)
3. members playtest the resulting map, judging on playability, fun and visual style.

How to get the pictures?

ARCHITECTURE BLOGS
- scroll through architecture blogs until you find a building you like and start mapping it

Other engines can and should be used (Radiant-based, I'm really just thinking xonotic). Cubes are hard, man!

Don't give other members homework unless they ask for it.

Make a map project each day.

Oh! Map a building from your neighborhood, using photos as textures. You can go and measure it all you like! Find an abandoned building and map that! Find an abandoned building picture blog and take ideas from there. The point isn't just to make a playable map, it's modeling, and this is a skill that you can use later in several other places, not just game mapping.

now ill check out some architecture blogs >:) and btw will u be a little more active again? (:

Get as many architecture blogs in your feed reader as possible. Bookmark posts you like, and try to map them. You can make mapmodels for furniture (with some 3D editing software like blender or Maya), You can make the layout in a cube2 engine or in Radiant, or any other engine. You can make the whole thing in blender ffs!

It's all about attitude, nothing to do with skill really. Skill increases naturally, along with other characteristics.

Post more ideas here guys.

Sweet

I do want to stress this: It is not REQUIRED that you do these challenges. However, it is encouraged. That way, we can remain active :D

We're not going to make you do these projects only, either. The point is that each person can suggest small mapping projects whenever they want. Large projects are still completely open and doable, so we'd love to see those too!

Pic related, it's the Capitol Building in Columbus, Ohio

haha nice! looks like an easy project for blender/radiant, maybe cube2 too, i dunno.

But seriously, let's set up a link thread and sticky it, and we'll all paste links in there for inspiration and other things

Zoocata

Basically did this in the course of 45-60 minutes.

My critiques:

arches are round in the original, pointy in yours
row of small windows up top is made of rectangly windows, yours are kinda rounded
row of attached bodies does not look the least bit similar

Post more architecture links here, and more resources in the resources section.
